Dr. Sam Barfell assumed the position of Head of School at Southside Christian School in June 2015. As Head of School, Dr. Barfell oversees the school’s more than 250 employees and 1,400 students in grades Pre-K 2-12th. During his time at Southside Christian School, the enrollment of the school has grown by 400 students, received exemplary accreditation from the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) twice, and received accreditation and member of council status from the Council on Educational Standards and Excellence. Dr. Barfell has led two major capital campaigns: the Sabre Stadium renovation in 2016 and then opening of the Walt and Libby Handford Building in 2023.
Prior to coming to Southside Christian School, Dr. Barfell served as Vice President of Professional Development and the Executive Editor of Christian School Education, a quarterly professional journal. Dr. Barfell has served in Christian education for over 40 years, most of which have been as a Head of School. Additionally, he has served on numerous accreditation teams and as an adjunct professor at Indiana Wesleyan University, Huntington University, and Columbia International University.
Dr. Barfell holds degrees a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education, Master’s degree in theology and Christian school administration, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. He and his wife, Jenni, have three adult children and two beautiful grandchildren. They are active in service and community at Rocky Creek Church.
