Distinguished Alumni

Steve Ware, Class of 1981

Each year we take a moment at homecoming to recognize a Southside Christian School graduate who has demonstrated a lifestyle consistent with the Christ-like character, biblical-values, and our expected student outcomes of:  1) spiritual formation in Christ, 2) intellectual development, and 3) cultural engagement.

This year’s alumnus of the year was Mr. Steve Ware from the SCS class of 1981.

Steve’s life is an incredible story including countless foster homes and tragedy. But the gospel of Jesus Christ transformed Steve, and then in God’s sovereignty, He placed him at SCS.

Since graduating from SCS in 1981, Steve has had an accomplished career as a business leader and entrepreneur including starting, owning and operating multiple businesses.

In 2008, Steve purchased some property in the heart of Columbia, South Carolina that was formerly the Gardendale Tennis and Swim Club. He spent the next two years renovating the property and reopened the facility in 2010 as a nonprofit Christian summer camp.

River’s Edge Retreat was developed to provide the local community a peaceful spiritual haven of renewal and hope. The goal of River’s Edge Retreat is to share the love of Christ to every child. It is dedicated to seeing that every child, no matter their financial or social background, has a chance to create a bright future. They do this through providing high quality summer camp opportunities for students in a Christ-centered environment.

Steve’s wife, Kathy, is a part of the leadership team at River’s Edge retreat, in addition to being an elementary teacher at Harbison West Elementary School. Steve and Kathy are the proud parents of four daughters and one son.

Congratulations to the 2019 Alumnus of the year – Mr. Steve Ware!
