Step into Mrs. Parson’s PreK-2 classroom on any given morning, and you’ll instantly realize something vital. Our Early Education division isn't a typical preschool. It is a fully developed, intentional learning environment designed specifically for the unique ways two-year-olds grow and thrive.
Beyond the Bell stepped inside the classroom to see how learning comes alive through small group instruction, guided discovery, and direct sensory exploration. At this age, children learn best by doing. Through an active "search and find" sensory model, Mrs. Parson and Teacher's Assistant Mrs. Meister use hands-on centers to help toddlers harness their five senses to figure out how the world works around them.
With science curiosity and sensory tables, little fingers dive into squishy textures, feeling cold, smooth, or rough materials while exploring cause and effect. Through art and fine motor skills, our toddlers strengthen their small hand muscles as they squeeze clay, smear vibrant paint, and grip big crayons, discovering what their sight and touch can create. Children hear rich storytelling, name familiar objects, and act out everyday routines, connecting language with sight and sound. Then, there's our favorite: Big Blocks, Little Blocks. Spatial awareness and problem-solving build higher as our little architects balance shapes, listen to the crash of falling towers, and test stability.
Our daily schedule at Southside Christian balances these dynamic centers with targeted small-group rotations, covering Pre-Writing, Fine Motor, Science Experiments, Gross Motor, Math, and Cognitive activities to ensure every child receives tailored support.
This Week’s Unit: "God Made Everything"
This week, our curriculum integrated faith and foundational academic concepts into one cohesive focus. Centered on Genesis 1, our two-year-olds celebrated the creation story by exploring the color blue (the sky and waters), tracing and naming the letter C, identifying the square shape, and practicing counting with the number 1.
Whether feeling a blue square block or seeing a creation-themed storybook, our PreK 2 learners aren't just memorizing facts; they are using every sense God gave them to explore, understand, and wonder at the world around them.
