Faith in the Formula: From STEAM to STEM
At Southside Christian School, our STEAM and STEM programs integrate Science, Technology, Art, Engineering, and Mathematics within the South Carolina core curriculum.

Beyond the Bell stepped inside the classroom to join STEAM Teacher Karen Vaughn to observe how the STEAM program impacts individual learning for elementary school students.
When asked about the curriculum, Mrs. Vaughn, who works with our students to bring practical solutions into the classroom, said:
"Elementary STEAM gives students the opportunity to learn by doing—asking questions, trying ideas, solving problems, and learning from mistakes. It is exciting to see students build confidence as they discover that there isn’t always just one way to solve a problem and their ideas can lead to creative solutions."
This semester, our elementary students remain focused, driven, and excited to create their own inventions.
STEM
Entering our middle school division births a pivotal season where students begin asking deeper questions about the world around them. When students learn subjects in isolation, they often miss how the individual pieces fit into the bigger picture. The STEM program at Southside Christian further bridges this gap, showing how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics naturally intersect and reflect an intentional, biblical worldview.
Middle School Science and STEM Teacher Angela Henderson stated:
"STEM courses give students access to opportunities and hands-on, industry-based experiences they might not otherwise get, helping prepare them for college and the workplace. At Southside Christian, we have the opportunity to view STEM through a Biblical lens that allows us to understand that God is a God of order, even in identifying the engineering design process."
At the heart of our curriculum is the engineering design model. Rather than treating science as mere fact memorization or math as isolated drills, we show students the incredible synergy of asking scientific questions, identifying human needs, and leveraging math and technology.
Henderson also stated:
"In the middle school STEM club, "STEM for the Good," we can use STEM principles and share gifts to help others. We are partnering with local organizations, specifically one that helps people in need of transportation have access to bicycles. God has given us abilities that we can use to impact those around us and for the glory of God."
Through the STEAM and STEM programs, our students learn that innovation is an act of stewardship and love for their neighbors. Students consistently demonstrate how their ideas can make a tangible difference in the community. Through this integrated approach, high-level coursework does more than prepare students for high school academics. It builds a lasting foundation where faith and reason work hand in hand, equipping students to go out into the world as thoughtful, compassionate problem solvers.
