Meet the Teacher: Mr. Fred Barrett

We’re excited to introduce to you another member of our SCS community, Mr. Fred Barrett, middle and high school teacher. Read below to learn more about Mr. Barrett and why he loves teaching at SCS.
What do you teach at SCS? What grades/school divisions?
I teach Middle School and High School Choir, as well as High School Speech and Debate.
What brought you to SCS?
I had been teaching at several homeschool fine arts schools and needed a steadier job. I had prayed to ask God to lead me in the direction he had for me. I knew about the opening at SCS but was unsure if that's where God would have me. Within two days of praying about the job at SCS, three separate friends encouraged me to apply. That's when I knew God was moving me to teach at SCS.
How long have you been a teacher at Southside Christian School?
This is my 5th year at SCS.
How do you see Christ working in the lives of your students?
As a small group leader, I've had the opportunity to help young men in their walks with Christ.
Where did you attend college/what degree?
I graduated from Bob Jones University with a BS in Music Education.
Where did you grow up/where are you from?
I've lived my entire life in Greenville, South Carolina.
What do you love about teaching at SCS?
I love the community of faculty and administration. The work atmosphere is amazing!
What is the one thing you want your students to take away from your class?
I want my students to understand that even though I teach music, I teach people first and foremost. I want them to know that through music I am teaching them better life skills.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love going to Carowinds with my family. We are season pass holders there. I also love camping and being in the mountains! I also enjoy rooting for my favorite sports teams, Atlanta Braves, Denver Broncos, and Clemson Tigers.
If you were an ice cream flavor, what would you be and why?
Moose Tracks! Not only is it one of my favorites but it's such a diverse ice cream, and I have many diverse interests.
