An emphasis is placed on mastery of basic facts and skills, problem solving, and real world applications. Concepts covered include understanding numbers and operations; money and time; multiplication concepts and facts; division concepts and facts; data, graphing, and probability; geometry; measurement; fractions and decimals; multiplying and dividing by one digit numbers.
Math facts timed tests will include addition and subtraction facts 0 – 18 and multiplication and division facts
1 – 10 with the following guidelines:
First nine weeks 20 per minute (+/-)
Second nine weeks 25 per minute (+/-)
Third nine weeks 25 per minute (+/-)
15 per minute (x)
Fourth nine weeks 25 per minute (+/-)
20 per minute (x)

v English Language Arts – Bob Jones University Press, novels, Zaner Bloser Simplified Handwriting
Third graders receive advance phonics instruction with an emphasis on comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing through the Bob Jones University Press series and cross-curricular projects. Novels are used for literature enrichment. ACSI material is used for a systematic approach to spelling. Cursive handwriting is practiced and perfected.

Novels Read Outside of Class
Third graders are expected to read a minimum of seven novels outside of class and are expected to complete various book reports for the seven novels. Reading time should not be considered homework. Reading to your child or having your child read to you familiarizes your child with book print and helps with decoding skills. Parents can enhance comprehension and awareness skills by asking questions during and after reading times. The novels are to be chosen by the student and must be on an appropriate reading level for the student. The novel selection and book reports follow the guidelines listed below.

v Science – Bob Jones University Press
Science includes the study of health and is taught on an alternating basis with social studies. Topics covered include animals, plants, classification of rocks and soil, the solar system, sources of energy, sound, work, heat in matter, and the integumentary (skin)system of the human body. Scientific Inquiry is incorporated throughout all unit of study.
v Social Studies – East Educational
Social studies is taught on an alternation basis with science. The entire year is spent learning about South Carolina. The study begins with the focus on the early Indian settlers and continues all the way through the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Great Depression.

Homework
Third graders will spend approximately 30 minutes completing math, English, and spelling homework. Science, history, or special projects will require additional homework time. Homework is an extension of skills taught in class and should be considered part of the education process.
Music
Third grade students will have music on a weekly basis. Grade appropriate skills are taught and include recorder, visual and aural identification of familiar instruments, extensive vocal development, classical instruments and composers, and vocal and instrumental performance.
Library
Students in third grade are encouraged to read a variety of books from all parts of the Lower School Library. They are taught how to log on to the computer with a password and how to access and use LibraryPro, the
on-line library catalog. Students are challenged with locating books by the author’s name, book title, subject, and by keyword. They also start using nonfiction books to find information for projects assigned by their teacher. Students are encouraged to participate in the Accelerated Reader program. Library is considered an extension of the English language arts.
Physical Education
Third grade will consist of an incorporation of fundamental locomotor and non-locomotor movements into fitness and skill development, as well as an increase in sports-related skills and knowledge.
