Governance

Southside Christian School is a self-governing, community Christian school serving the entire Body of Christ in the greater Greenville area.  SCS board members are dedicated Christians who give unconditional acceptance to the SCS Statement of Faith and who meet the biblical qualifications for deacons, with the exception of gender.

At SCS, the board seeks God’s direction for the school and in much the same way that elders lead a church, they provide leadership to the school superintendent. The board aims to maintain a size of 5 to 9 members.  The board’s Nominating Committee screens and nominates, for board consideration, individuals to fill vacancies on the board each year. Board members serve no more than 2 consecutive 4-year terms.  A former member of the board may be nominated for board membership again after spending a minimum of one (1) year off the board. God has blessed SCS for over 35 years with many godly men and women who have been willing to serve on the board and provide direction for the school.

The board has adopted the Carver Policy Governance model to govern the school.

What is the Policy Governance® model?

Policy Governance is a framework of principles designed by Dr. John Carver that:

  • provides exceptional clarity to the role and functions of the board vs. the administration and staff;
  • organizes and aids development of board policies in a useful, clear, and consistent way;
  • facilitates the board’s complete accountability for their organization, while simultaneously enabling maximum freedom for the staff to do its job.

What are the Policy Governance principles?

The principles at the core of the Policy Governance system are:

  • Boards are the initial authority within the organization;
  • Board authority is group authority;
  • Boards speak with one voice, or not at all;
  • Boards speak through well-crafted written policies;
  • Boards rigorously monitor organizational performance, but only against what it has addressed in policy;
  • Boards need to empower those to whom they delegate authority while remaining fully accountable for organizational performance.
