Richard Mitchell teaches in the History Department at SCS: World Studies in 7th grade and State Studies in 8th grade. In the fall of 2000, Mr. Mitchell came to SCS after working for a textbook publisher for over ten years. Before that, he and his wife taught at Clinton Christian School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland for six years.
Mr. Mitchell has both a BA and an MA from Bob Jones University and is ACSI certified as a secondary history teacher.
Mr. Mitchell's great joy in life is teaching, and his passion is teaching history, especially to middle schoolers. In fact, Mr. Mitchell comes from a long line of middle school teachers: his grandmother and both his parents. When not engaged in teaching history, he enjoys reading history or developing a new handout or bulletin board idea while watching science fiction on TV.
Mr. Mitchell and his wife, Janet, have a 22-year-old son named Mark who lives in New York and a silver schnauzer named Phoebe. In past years, he has served as an assistant pastor, Sunday school teacher, and on the elder board of his church. Although he has never taken a mission trip, he would love to do so someday. Mr. Mitchell likes Chinese and Italian food and shopping at Barnes & Noble. The Mitchells are members of North Hills Community Church.
Mr. Mitchells favorite verse is Zechariah 4:6: "Then he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel saying, 'Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the LORD of hosts."
