Instrumental Music

The SCS Instrumental Music Department is made up of many different ensembles.  Some are classes that meet during the school day and some are extra-curricular activities.

Instrumental Music Classes:

Beginner Band is open to all 6th grade students who want to begin learning a traditional school band instrument.  Special emphasis is placed on the discovery of our special talents from God.

Middle School Band is an elective for 7th and 8th graders.  This class concentrates on the ensemble skills and musicianship of instrumental music.  This class will perform in several public concerts throughout the school year.  (Prerequisite:  must have been a member of the 6th grade Band or one year of private instruction)

High School Band is an elective course for instrumentalists in grades 9-12 who want to increase their abilities in advanced music.  Skills learned will be demonstrated in several performances throughout the school year, including the annual Spring Contest Trip.  (Prerequisites:  must have been a member of the Middle School Band or taken one-year private instruction)

Handbells is an elective for students in grades 9-12 who wish to study the fundamentals of music making through the unique form of ringing pitched bells.  This group will perform throughout the school year in a variety of concerts throughout the community.  When possible, an advanced class is also offered.

Music Honors is an independent study class that allows serious music students to study music theory and history.  Requirements include the completion of a theory text, private lessons, concert attendance and quarterly research projects.  (Prerequisites:  must be a junior or senior enrolled in one of the major performing ensembles)

Instrumental Extra-Curricular

Pep Band is a voluntary instrumental group that plays for home football games.  All students in grades 7-12 are eligible but members must meet a minimum-playing requirement and be committed to performances.  Parents and alumni are also invited to join in. This ensemble will explore forms of music not played regularly in the classroom.  Auditions will be determined by interest.

Jazz Band is a voluntary group that learns the basics of jazz music. This ensemble rehearses after school and some evenings throughout the year.  Performances take place throughout the year at several events.
