An emphasis is placed on mastery of basic facts and skills, problem solving, and real world applications. Concepts covered include understanding numbers and operations; data, graphing, and time; multiplication and division facts; multiplying by one and two digit numbers; dividing by one and two digit divisors; geometry; fractions and decimals; measurement and geometry; probability, algebra, and graphing.
Math facts timed tests will include addition and subtraction facts 0 18 and multiplication and division facts 1 12 with the following guidelines:

v English Language Arts Bob Jones University Press, novels, Zaner Bloser Simplified Handwriting
Fourth graders begin to move from learning to read to reading to learn. English language arts instruction includes an emphasis on comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing through the Bob Jones University Press series and cross-curricular projects. Novels are used for literature enrichment. ACSI material is used for a systematic approach to spelling.

Novels Read Outside of Class
Fourth graders are expected to read a minimum of seven novels outside of class and are expected to complete various book reports for the seven novels. Reading time should not be considered homework. Reading to your child or having your child read to you familiarizes you child with book print and helps with decoding skills. Parents can enhance comprehension and awareness skills by asking questions during and after reading times. The novels are to be chosen by the student and must be on an appropriate reading level for the student. The novel selection and book reports follow the guidelines listed below.

v Science/ Health Bob Jones University Press
Science topics include organisms and their environments, simple machines, electricity, magnets, light, the moon and sun, land and water regions, and natural resources. Health topics include the skeletal and muscular systems and the digestive system. Scientific Inquiry is incorporated throughout all unit of study.

Fourth graders begin with studying the American Revolution and various historical figures and documents that relate to the start of our great nation. They will continue their study of American history through the American democracy.

Homework
Fourth graders will spend approximately 40 minutes completing math and spelling homework. Science, social studies, or special projects will require additional homework time. Homework is an extension of skills taught in class and should be considered part of the education process.
Music
Fourth grade students will have music on a weekly basis. Grade appropriate skills are taught and include the instruments of the orchestra, production of sound, time signatures, recorder, vocal and instrumental performance, and music history.
Library
Fourth graders are encouraged to read a variety of books from all parts of the Lower School Library. Students learn to use many different sources to locate information including a variety of reference books. Students learn what kind of information each reference book can provide by practicing using different sources including dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesauruses, atlases, and Bible concordances. Students are encouraged to participate in the Accelerated Reader program. Library is considered an extension of the English language arts.
Physical Education
The emphasis in the fourth grade will be placed on lead up games as well as skill refinement. Students will continue to enhance skill development of movement skills and overall fitness.
