Drama and Speech
Drama I & II are electives for students in grades 9-12 who want to study basic drama techniques and theater history (Drama I) as well as advanced acting and play analysis (Drama II). Drama involves the combined, multi-level talents and efforts of many people working together successfully toward common goals. A variety of dramatic forms are studied as well as behind-the-scenes skills such as sound, lighting, makeup, costume construction and set design. Students will learn to perfect their vocal abilities, write and direct a play, perform stage combat, develop a realistic character and communicate clearly as they perform for classes and in chapel.
Each year, SCS presents two full length productions that often use students from both the Lower and Upper Schools. These productions may be plays or musicals. Past productions have included Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof, The Sound of Music, Little Women, Scrooge!, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Anne of Green Gables and Camelot. Participation in this event is by audition only and requires a commitment to all rehearsals and performances.
The Forensics program provides students who have a competitive nature with an outlet in the tournaments held by the National Forensics League. Students will choose between Public Forum Debate training or Individual Event experience which includes instruction in humorous and dramatic interpretation, original oratory, extemporaneous speaking, duo acting, impromptu speaking, and group performance.
The drama department is a member of the National Forensic League (NFL), the South Carolina Speech and Theatre Association (SCSTA), and Christians in Theatre Arts (CITA), providing students with the opportunity of participating in speech and debate competitions at the local, state and national levels.
