Jim Thompson '99 Hosts Talent Show

On Wednesday, January 24, 2007, the students and staff at Southside Christian School enjoyed the third annual talent show. Sponsored by Student Council and hosted by SCS alumnus Jim Thompson, the show featured dancing, vocal groups, skits, and monologues. Dressed in a yellow undershirt topped with a blue collared shirt and pinstripe suit, Thompson, a 1999 graduate of SCS, completed his outfit with red socks and sneakers with green shoelaces. His dress and bearing set the stage for an enjoyable program.

With a superhero theme, the walls of the cafetorium displayed scenes from places such as Gotham City and Metropolis while the house band, led by Gabe Simon, filled time between performances with theme music from the favorite superhero shows. Trevor and Tyler Drummond favored the audience with a tae kwon do dance, and Alexandra McFadden livened the atmosphere with her Irish dance. The audience enjoyed a harmonica solo from James Robbins and a drum solo by Billy Radlein. Two comedy routines kept the audience laughing. Lindsay Furrow, Josh Weir, and Krysia Kimlin performed "My New Philosophy," a skit featuring Charlie Brown characters Sally Brown and Schroeder. Ben Wofford, Reid Bagwell, and Paul Andrews performed an athletics skit designed to make the most routine health practices appear humorous. Vocal solos and other acts completed the line-up of twenty routines that had been chosen through an audition process in January.

Student Council officers Emily Becraft, Melissa Thaddaeus, and Kley Sippel deserved the greatest applause for their behind-the-scenes work at producing a truly enjoyable event, but a special thanks goes to Jim Thompson for his memorable performance as emcee.

Beth Hill Montgomery '94 Shares Testimony

In April 2006, Beth Montgomery shared her testimony with grades 6-8.  Beth explained that she had heard about the Lord from the time she was very young.  She had professing, believing parents, and although she said a prayer when she was seven, she wasn't truly saved.  About sixth grade, she began lying to her parents and using foul language.  In eighth grade, she came to SCS and joined the youth group at church.  It was then she began living like a chameleon.  She could put on a "church act" and a "school act," but she was living increasingly like the world.  She explained that by high school, "it was all about me."

As Beth entered college, she continued to live like a chameleon, assuming that all Christians lived this way.  Following college, she threw herself into her marriage and career.  She had everything she had always wanted, and yet she was miserable, sad, and depressed.  She finally got back into a really great church, and at her lowest point, she got counseling.  It was then she realized that God loved her enough to save her.  She no longer wanted to be in control of her life, and God took control.  She can now see a time in her life when her desires changed.  This time it's real.  Sin bothers her, and she repents when she sins.

Beth challenged the students with I John 1:6, "If we say we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness, we lie."  She also took the students to I John 2:3-6, I John 2:15-16, and Colossians 3:8-11.  She challenged the students to know why they profess to know the Lord and not to just depend on the faith of parents or teachers.

Holly Beech '94 Speaks in Chapel

Holly Beech, ’94 SCS grad, spoke to students in grades 7-12 during chapel on Thursday, March 23, 2006.  Holly currently serves as a missionary with Trans World Radio in Africa.  Holly told the students that she had grown up in a Christian home, but at the age of 11 she realized that she needed a personal relationship with Christ.  She says that “then the adventure began.”  She often heard missionaries speak, but they were always church planters or Bible translators.  Her interests were more technical.  She still felt a burden for missions.  Between her junior and senior years at Moody Bible Institute, she went to Guam to work in radio broadcasting.  Since then, God has used her to broadcast the Gospel in a variety of countries.  She is also heavily involved in teaching nationals broadcasting techniques and technical skills.  Holly taught the SCS students to say thank you in an African language and to shake hands as Africans do.  She also challenged the students to ask God what He would want them to do, realizing they may end up in places they never dreamed.
