Distinguished Alumni

Each year, we take a moment at homecoming to recognize a Southside Christian School graduate who has demonstrated a lifestyle consistent with Christ-like character, biblical values, and our expected student outcomes of spiritual formation in Christ, intellectual development, and cultural engagement.

This year's recipient of the distinguished alumni award is Mark Steenback!

Mark graduated from SCS as a part of the class of 1998. While at SCS he was a 4-year starter for the Varsity Baseball team, played multiple instruments in band, sang in the choir, was part of the boys ensemble “Singing Sabres”, and served on student council. He briefly held the strikeout record for the SCS varsity team until “Dave went and ruined it for him.” And unless you actually went to school with him, everyone just knows him as “Mrs. Steenback’s son.”

After graduating he went to the Master’s University in Southern California, earning a Bachelor's in Bible Exposition and Master’s in Biblical Counseling. While at The Master’s University he met his wife, Shawna. They were married in 2004 and moved back to SC in 2006. They live in Mauldin and have 4 boys; Emmory (14), Evan (12), Cooper (9), and Caius (6).

Since returning to SC, most of Mark’s career has been in the non-profit sector here in Greenville. Currently he is the Chief Resource Officer for Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County where he has been for the last 8+ years. He has volunteered as a coach in many different leagues around Greenville and continues to serve as the 10u head football coach for the SCS Sabre rec program, as well as teams in Greenville Little League and the YMCA. He also teaches the teen Sunday School Class for his local church.

Mark says he is very thankful for his time at SCS and recognizes that his experience here helped instill in him a passion for serving and loving the community. Reflecting on his time at SCS, Mark says, “The examples I saw in my teachers and the encouragement and counsel I was given helped shape my thinking and the path that I chose in service to others. There were so many men and women who took the time and energy to love and guide me here at SCS. I wouldn’t be where I am without their sacrifice and dedication.”

We are proud to call Mark Steenback an alumnus of Southside Christian School!

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to one or more former students who are exemplary Christians and have demonstrated a desire to serve the Lord beyond their years at SCS. To
