What are the NHS and NJHS?

The National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society are leaders among organizations and societies that promote appropriate recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service.  Thousands of schools are chartered and their chapters are following the Constitution.

National Honor Society membership is often regarded as a valid indicator that the student will succeed in life and particularly in studies at the post-secondary education level.  The Honor Society member has already exhibited academic achievement, leadership, honorable and admirable character, as well as service demonstrating that the member is willing to use talents and skills for the improvement of society.

Qualifications for NHS/NJHS

NHS-sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have completed at least one semester at Southside Christian School.  They must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.8 in all High school credits.  They must be approved by the faculty and staff as being conscientious of scholarship, typifying leadership, interested in serving others, and exhibiting good character.

NJHS-eighth graders and freshman who have completed at least two semesters at Southside Christian School.  They must maintain a annual numeric average of 91.38.  They must be approved by the faculty and staff as being conscientious of scholarship, typifying leadership, interested in serving others, and exhibit good character.

New inductions only take place at the beginning of each school year.  Students may become ineligible if they cannot maintain the previously mentioned guidelines or experience suspension.  Refer to Handbook pg 15.  If a student's grades drop below the requirements, they are placed on probation for one semester to meet the academic requirements without losing their enrollment in NHS/NJHS.

To find out more about NHS and NJHS visit the national web site at NHS@nassp.org or NJHS@nassp.org.

Requirements for NHS/NJHS

Students are required to attend meetings that are held during lunch on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Students must complete 20 hours of service.  Service hours are defined as an activity performed for the benefit of another with no compensation received whether monetarily or some other way.  Mission trips and church activities such as Bible schools may be counted for no more than 10 hours of service.  Activities that students are required to attend, and family responsibilities can not count.  The school often times is notified of opportunities in the community where students can receive service hours.  Students who volunteer for these will receive excused absences from school.  Service hours must be completed between June 1 of the current year and May 31.   Seniors must have their service hours completed by May 15.  Service hours must be recorded and approved using the form attached as a link below.  The responsible adult involved in the activity must sign off on the form verifying the service completion.  Parents may sign off if this makes for an uncomfortable situation or no one is available.
