The National Beta Club started in 1934 with just 15 members out of Landrum, South Carolina. The club was built on the motto, “Let us lead by serving others,” focusing its purpose on reaching local communities through acts of service. The club also seeks to recognize high-achieving students for their leadership skills and academic achievements. Today there are over 416,000 active members serving across the United States and Europe.
At Southside Christian, being a member of the National Beta Club is no small honor. After induction, which is opened to qualifying juniors and seniors, the students learn what it means to be ambassadors for Christ. Inductees must display an exemplary character in Christ, exude a commendable attitude, merit credible achievement, and be approved by their classroom teachers. Along with these qualities, members must maintain a grade point average of 3.4 and accrue at least 30 community service hours per year. These community service hours must be turned into the club sponsor, showing evidence that no monetary compensation was paid.
Sponsored by Kristin McDowell, Executive Assistant to the Superintendent, the club has participated in a variety of service projects such as assisting with Southside’s capital campaign kickoff and raising funds for News Channel 4’s tsunami relief effort. Last year a handful of members traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, to volunteer at the National Headquarters for the Operation Christmas Child project. “My overall impression of the students involved in Beta is that most of them are eager to serve. Most enjoy doing things to help others who are less fortunate than themselves or others who have needs. It is a joy to work with young people who are willing to give of themselves to help others,” said Mrs. McDowell.
Katie Solesby, senior, currently serves as club president.
